This Sunday, April 28th, Secondhand Sunday returns to various neighbourhoods across the city.

Held every year on the last Sundays in April and September, Secondhand Sunday is an inspiring, inclusive community reuse day that encourages Toronto neighbours to share their reusable goods with one another.

Developed and run by a small team of volunteers from the Wychwood Barns community, Secondhand Sunday and the City of Toronto have partnered up with the goal of reducing the city’s collective ecological footprint (and getting rid of unwanted, reusable items laying around your home!!).

The program also aims to connect local charities with items that they may need, and has reached out in the past to charitable organizations including Na-Me-Res, St. Clair West Services for Seniors, and YWCA Arise Shelter for Women.

According to the organizers, everyone is welcome to participate and it’s easy to get on board.

By 9 a.m., participants are asked to leave any unwanted, yet still usable items on their property for their neighbours to take for free.  (Items should be placed on the property next to the sidewalk or curb). Residents are then welcome to take a walk through the area and see what else is out there – it’s a chance to meet some neighbours and find some new-to-you treasures.

All it takes is a few people on the street to make Secondhand Sunday a success. Interested residents are encouraged to contact organizers at the links below so that they can be sent promotional materials to share with neighbours and a sign to place beside their unwanted items.

Residents living in condos or apartment buildings are also encouraged to participate.  If you're interested in hosting a Secondhand Sunday event at your condo, email organizers for more information.

After 5 p.m. on Sunday, Secondhand Sunday asks that participants collect any remaining items and either keep them, or donate them to an appropriate charity or second-hand shop.

If it's raining heavily, Secondhand Sunday will be moved to the following Sunday. Participants can keep an eye on SHS’s social media channels for all updates.

Programs like these can and do make a difference, and Secondhand Sunday is always a fun, successful event.
