A group of local artists came together to paint murals of George Floyd and other Black figures throughout Toronto’s Graffiti Alley over the weekend, in support of anti-racism and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The graffiti event, titled ‘Paint the City Black,’ coincided with Black Live Matters protests and rallies taking place in Toronto and in cities around the world after Floyd was killed in Minneapolis last week by a police officer who had pinned him down with his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes.

There were also murals of Martin Luther King Jr., Breonna Taylor – the 26-year-old woman who was killed by Kentucky police in March – and a mural of 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet, who died after falling from her apartment balcony in High Park last week while police were on the scene.

Those interested in checking out the new murals can find them in the alleyway running between McDougall Lane and Augusta Avenue, near Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue.

You can check out photos and videos posted online offering a glimpse of the transformed alleyway.
