A Site Plan Approval application has been submitted to the City of Toronto for the FlyOver Canada attraction in the heart of the city’s top tourist attraction area, which includes the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, Ripley’s Aquarium, Roundhouse Park, and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The popular attraction, which already has locations open in Vancouver and Reykjavík, Iceland, was first announced last year, and now construction for the project — which would be located at 292 Bremner Boulevard — is closer to beginning.
Located on the former Railway Lands in downtown Toronto, the site of the proposed project is situated at the base of the CN Tower in the plaza between the Rogers Centre and Ripley’s Aquarium.
Once the site plan application is approved, construction for the project will begin, which includes a flying simulator theatre that’s intended to take guests on a 6,000-kilometre virtual journey across some of Canada’s most iconic natural wonders and scenery.
The theatre will accommodate up to 88 seated guests, feet dangling, before a 23-metre by 17.5-metres spherical screen. Using state-of-the-art audiovisual technology, the experience will be enhanced through special effects, including wind, mist, and scents, combined with the ride’s motion, to create an immersive flying experience for guests
Construction of the new FlyOver Canada location would make improvements to the area that the building will be located, including the addition of three separate gardens that reflect Canada’s diverse landscapes.
This includes the South Garden, which represents the Boreal Forest, the Entrance & Sky Garden would represent the Laurentia bioregion that covers most of Eastern Canada, and the North Garden would showcase the tundra by using rough stones and small plantings typically found here.
According to the Site Plan Approval submitted to the City, the project complies with the various site-specific zoning by-laws already in place for the area, meaning the planning approvals process could be quick.
If the plans are approved, the project is expected to be completed in 2022.
