Here's What You Need To Know About GTA Remembrance Day Services

Remembrance Day marks the end of the First World War 101 years ago at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

In the conflict that came to be known as The Great War (and sarcastically The War to End All Wars), over nine million service personnel and an estimated 20 million civilians in total were killed.

Canadians, fighting for the first time as a distinct force, made great sacrifices in battles such as Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and finally The Hundred Days Offensive, which ultimately led to Germany's surrender.

Here are some of the places in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton where you can head to on Monday to honour all of those who have served and those who have perished in all the wars since. Additionally, if you’re unable to attend in person, many of the services can be viewed on respective YouTube channels or Facebook pages.

In addition, those who have served in the military, and their companions, can ride for free on Metrolinx, the TTC, MiWay and Brampton Transit.

Scarborough Civic Centre

Veterans Getting There

Metrolinx

On Remembrance Day, GO Transit, and UP Express will show their gratitude by allowing free passage for those who have served in the military, along with their companions.

Current members of the military are asked to identify themselves by wearing their medals, beret, blazer, uniform, or other similar belonging while travelling or carry their service papers or identification card.

Immediate family members of deceased veterans may also ride for free if carrying something to identify their relation to the late veteran, such as service papers or an identification card.

TTC

The TTC will pause all service for two minutes of silence from 11 am to 11:02 am across the entire system on Remembrance Day in honour of Canada’s fallen.

According to the TTC, all current members of the Canadian Armed Forces in uniform, as well as war and peacekeeping veterans wearing military service medals or ribbons can ride the TTC free of charge, along with one companion.

TTC buses and streetcars will display a Lest We Forget sign, and a special message will run on all subway platform screens.

In Mississauga, Nov. 11, Canadian Forces veterans and their companions can ride MiWay for free.

Brampton transit is also giving free transportation to war veterans on Nov. 11.
