10 Cheap Things To Do In Toronto This Weekend (May 3-5)

It’s going to be a glorious weekend in the city. Not only is it expected to be full of sunshine, but Toronto’s cherry blossoms are expected to hit peak bloom any day now.

The first weekend of May also marks “Star Wars” Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Game 4 of Raptors vs. 76ers. With so much to look forward to, you might have a hard time deciding what you want to do.

1. “Star Wars” Trivia: Episodes 1-6

When: Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $9

May the 4th has unofficially been dubbed “Star Wars” Day. To mark the occasion, head over to Hemingway’s Restaurant and test your knowledge on the galaxy far, far away. Teams of two to six can compete to win one of three $100 gift cards. Trivia starts at 3 p.m. sharp and there will be “Star Wars”-themed drinks!

2. #FNLROM: Afterlife

Where: Royal Ontario Museum — 100 Queen’s Park
When: Friday from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Cost: $17 for adults; $15.50 for students; $5 for members

The spring season of the ROM’s Friday Night Live kicks off on Friday. This particular event shines a spotlight on Egyptian-Canadian talent and celebrates the museum’s Egyptian collections. Dance the night away to DJ Sammy and indulge in good eats by Mnandi Pies, My Crème Caramel, and more. The event is 19+.

3. Citizen Crafts Mother’s Day Market

Where: The Great Hall — 1087 Queen St. W.
When: Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: Free!

Get the mom in your life something truly unique from this Mother’s Day Market. With over 45 handmade artisan and food vendors to choose from, you won’t go home empty-handed. The first 100 people to arrive will receive a raffle ticket for a prize of $25 to shop the market. And those who buy from three different vendors will receive a raffle card to win the grand prize — one product from each vendor!

4. Bumble Sweat Series

Where: Canoe Landing — 95 Fort York Blvd.
When: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Cost: Free with Bumble app

In need of a good sweat session? Join Lany, founder of Trained by Lany, for a 60-minute full body workout in the great outdoors. The best part is that there’ll be PUMA giveaways at the session, and the class is free to anyone who downloads the Bumble app. But for those who can’t make this week, don’t worry! Lany is also hosting classes on May 11 and 25.

5. Cinco de Mayo Weekend Fiesta

When: Saturday from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Assembly Chef’s Hall is throwing the biggest Cinco de Mayo party in the city! A $20 ticket gets you entry into the event, as well as a full-size dish from any of the 17 vendors in the hall. Some of Toronto’s hottest DJs will provide entertainment, but there will also be games, activations, and amazing drink specials.

6. Toronto Coffee & Tea Expo

Where: CF Shops at Don Mills — 1090 Don Mills Rd.
When: Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: $15

Celebrate cafe culture at this one-of-a-kind expo. The event will feature 60 local vendors and cafes and offer guests the opportunity to buy freshly roasted beans, stock up on coffee and tea equipment, and learn from industry experts. There will also be workshops, such as TIY (Tea-It-Yourself) and How to Be a Barista. And did we mention there will be unlimited free samples?

7. Toronto Raptors Tailgate Party

Where: Maple Leaf Square — 15 York St.
When: Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Cost: Free!

Come together to cheer on the Raptors as they take on the 76ers in Game 4, Round 2 of the NBA playoffs. Entry to the tailgate is from Lakeshore Blvd. and Bay St. There will be a DJ playing ahead of the game, which starts at 3:30 p.m. However, it’s best to arrive early to avoid any lines. After all, Toronto Raptors pride is strong.

8. Veg Spring Market

Where: Artscape Wychwood Barns — 601 Christie St.
When: Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cost: $5

This is the second annual market put on by the Toronto Vegetarian Association. Explore more than 40 veggie businesses at this event and participate in a variety of workshops. The workshops are first come, first served and cover a range of topics including vegan fashion and making your own clothes, and a discussion on demystifying Canada’s new food guide.

When: Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you love locally designed clothes and accessories, then you won’t want to miss this pop-up! More than 70 Canadian designer brands will showcase their work here, including Hilary MacMillan, LOUVE Montreal, and Svea Swim. Bring the whole family and get ready to shop.

10. Comics & Craft Beer Tasting

Where: Page & Panel: The TCAF Shop — 789 Yonge St.
When: Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Cost: $10

Beer and comics might not sound like an iconic duo, but they’re about to become one. At this event hosted by the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, five authors will do readings from their debut comics and each title will be paired with a unique beer. Whether you’re coming for the beer or to gush about comics, this event is sure to be a unique experience for all.

Although this event doesn’t technically count as cheap, we couldn’t leave it off the list. This Sip & Swap is perfect for anyone who is in full spring cleaning mode and is trying to get rid of unworn items in their closet. A ticket gets you entry into the event, two drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a goodie bag, and the chance to swap your clothes with others. Guests must bring a minimum of five clothing items to attend. And to keep the party going, a DJ and photographer will be on site.

BONUS #2: Cambie Wedding Market

Where: Cambie — 1048 Queen St. W.
When: Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
