February 5, 2019, marks the start of the Chinese (or Lunar) New Year. This year is the year of the Earth Pig.

In Chinese culture, pigs are a symbol of wealth, but if you are born in the year of the pig (1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019) that doesn't mean this year is going to be a particularly wealthy —or even lucky— one.

According to ancient Chinese astrology, people tend to have bad luck in their zodiac year. The bad luck is usually counteracted with the colour red and with the adornment on jade accessories.

But it's not all bad news for those born in the year of the pig, astrologists say it will be a year of ups and downs. So, if your zodiac is the pig, remember to be patient with yourself as things will improve next year.
