The Lakeshore West extension will leave Niagara Falls at 5:19 a.m. on weekdays making a stop in St. Catharines before continuing to Union Station. In the evening the train will depart from Union Station at 5:15 p.m.

The new route is four years ahead of schedule. In an announcement on Friday, Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek explained the government is working with CN to use existing lines for the new service.

Commuting to Niagara has long been a challenge for Torontonians. The original GO Transit line stopped in Hamilton forcing commuters to take the bus to continue on to Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.

GO Transit also offers seasonal trips to Niagara to help encourage tourism between the two cities.

The new route extension is less about tourism and more about improving the lives of workers.

“Too many people are stuck in gridlock across Ontario, costing our economy billions of dollars in lost productivity each year. That’s time away from work, leisure and family,” Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff said at the live announcement.

“This will benefit many workers in many local communities here in this region, like Port Colborne, Welland, Beamsville, Lincoln and Thorold,” Yurek added.

According to Yurek, this announcement is just the beginning of all the good news to come from GO Transit.
