Go Transit is going to the dogs — for now at least.

From July 20 to Oct. 15, Metrolinx is launching a pilot project that will allow you to bring a maximum of two leashed on its GO trains.

The Go Transit pilot is a result of a successful petition project by dog owner Kimberly Flemming. Last August she started the process asking Metrolinx to update its pet policy.

Her petition received 25,485 signatures and counting.

Anne Marie Aikins, Metrolinx spokesperson, tells CBC the new pet policy comes with leashes and strings attached.

On weekdays, commuters will be allowed a maximum of two leashed dogs between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., then again from 6 p.m. until the end of service.

During weekends and holidays, leashed dogs are allowed on all day. During rush hour, however, dogs must be transported in carriers.

If your dog has an "accident," you must clean it up and take it home. (Bring doggy bags!)

Half-way through the pilot project, Metrolinx will conduct a survey for customers to vote on its fate. When the pilot ends, a decision about whether or not to continue will be made swiftly.

Service animals are still allowed to ride GO trains all hours on weekdays and weekends.
